I have to admit that I was a little jealous when I saw that Batman Family got one hundred and twelve books in the DC Relaunch while the Superman Family only got four. Why does that stupid pointy-eared dork get all of the attention? Superman is the first and best superhero! I guess DC finally listened to my temper tantrums because they’re going to release a bunch of Superman and Superman related comics this year, and they all look pretty awesome. Hell, they look better than half the Superman stuff they’re putting out now. Superman.
One of the things that I really like about these new books is that each of them will operate in their universe, presenting different takes on the character and his world.
You want an all ages take on the franchise? There’s Superman Family Adventures. I’m happy to see that Krypto is alive and well in this comic, as he should be.
A continuation of the long running show, Smallville? Yup. Welcome to Smallville Season Eleven. I think if this franchise never came back, I would have been perfectly content what that. The show was pretty garbage at times, and I was really disappointed by the “Series” Finale, but now that Smallville is actually coming back, I’m legitimately excited to see the story continue. For all of its terrible, terrible faults, I enjoyed watching it every week. And I think with the creative team that’s on board, there’s a really good chance that comic might actually be good. Also, I just like seeing people completely lose their $#&@ over the show like it was a crime against humanity. Their hate keeps Smallville alive.
How about a Parallel Earth version of Superman and his family? Yeah they got that covered too, with World’s Finest and Earth 2. The new character designs are really interesting, and I’m really curious to see how Earth-2 is redesigned from the ground up.
Would you like to see a depressed version of the Man of Steel who still wears his underwear on the outside of his uniform, while worrying if having sex with a woman will explode her? Superman: Earth One Volume 2 is for you. I don’t think this is actually coming out until the Fall but but I’m including it anyway for the hell of it. I liked Volume 1 a lot, but I’m curious to see how the next chapter is received, considering the writer’s reputation has taken a solid hit since the release of the first Earth One book. I think he’s mostly known now as the dick that abandoned the Superman and Wonder Woman books and ruined Watchmen.
Look, you could the launch of these books as another example of DC being lazy and falling back on their known properties instead of trying to establish something new and creative. Maybe that reliance is ultimately bad for the company. I don’t care; these books all look cool, especially excited for Superman Family Adventures. Creators Art Baltazar and Franco previously worked on the acclaimed kids book Tiny Titans, and hopefully they’ll bring their mix of kid-friendly fare, adult comedic timing, and endless comic and pop culture references to the series. I feel like this type of book has been a long time coming.
